Before the birth of Christ there was little hope in the world. After the sin of Adam and Eve mankind devolved into darkness and wickedness such that their debasement led to judgement and destruction. At the time of Jesus’ birth King Herod ordered all the firstborn killed to protect his power, That same selfish sin that murdered millions since, is prevalent even to this day. So why does this continue to happen in our time?
In the early 1800s a group of Oregon Indians who had heard that the white man had :the book that told them about God, traveled across the country to St. Louis, only to return without the book of life. How could that happen in a “Christian” nation?
President Ronald Reagan answered that question when he said…
“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”
The freedom that our founders and generations since won and protected was first won at the cross of Christ where He died in our place and for our sin that we might be set free from the power of sin and death. It began in eternity past when our Creator decided that to deliver those he created, He would have to pay the price Himself for their sin by coming to His own and dying in their place.
Truly, “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself” that we might have life and that more abundantly.
That is why we celebrate His birth. God with us in grace and mercy.
