In 1950, President Harry Truman, , said, “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings we get from Exodus and St. Matthew, from Isaiah and St. Paul. I don’t think we emphasize that enough these days. If we don’t have a proper fundamental moral background, we will finally end up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in the rights for anybody except the State”.
Now comes the left in America ridiculing Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum’s 2008 address to a Catholic Universiy in which Santorum’s remarks indicated his belief that, “Satan had his sights set on America and the country was facing spiritual warfare.”
To Conservative Catholics and Protestants, who are far better acquainted with the teachings of Moses, Isaiah, St. Matthew and the Apostle Paul, Santorum was speaking the truth, as more and more observant voters attest, but to those in the unbelieving, post modern secular world who have no hope, no authority, and no understanding of where we are and where we are going, his statement was ‘stark rhetoric’, ignorant, unenlightened, and ‘ridiculous’.
As clearly revealed in Jesus’ teaching, their view is understandable. They do not know the Truth, being born of the flesh and not of the Spirit. Jesus said to a leader of the Jews, Unless one is born of water and the Spirit he can neither see nor enter the Kingdom of God.
Rick Santorum’s rise in the polls – to the surprise and dismay of those ignorant of spiritual truth as revealed in our Judeo Christian Scriptures – is predictbale. The public’s growing distaste for the constant negative personal attacks are rooted in those deep seated values and beliefs that arise from the Bible, and are deeply embedded in the conscience of most Americans.
Ridiculing a Presidential Candidate who is unapologetic for his faith and recognizes what others may reject, may seem useful to those on the left, it serves only to galvanize those of us who believe that America desperately needs a President rooted in the attestation of history and the God of creation whose “eternal rules of order and right” are proven.
As Truman said, “If we don’t have a proper fundamental moral background, we will finally end up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in the rights for anybody except the State“.
